From hay-mire to currier museum

We'll hop on a bus at 9 am and head from Hotelli Kolari across Torne River for Vasikkavuoma hay-mire in Swedish Pajala.

Vasikkavuoma hay-mire

Vasikkavuoma nature reserve is the larges mire in Scandinavia as well as the largest and best-preserved hay-mire in northern Europe. 70 out of its 300 barns have been fully restored to their original shape. From a bird-tower by the mire we can observe migratory birds and elk and on a clear day we'll be able to see fell-Ylläs on the Finnish side of Torne River. After having a quick cup of coffee upon arrival we'll take a walk on the wooden footpath while a local guide tells us about the different plants typical for the area. We'll settle down for lunch on open fire by the hay-mire.

From Vasikkavuoma we'll head for the village of Sattajärvi where we'll visit Kero shoe-factory. The factory - run by the third generation of Kero family - manufactures all sorts of traditional and modern goods from mainly reindeer leather. We'll be taken on a tour of the factory guided by the current manager Emma and also stop by the factory shop to buy any products of Kero. After the tour of the factory we'll stop by the currier museum beside the factory.

From Sattajärvi we'll return to Pajala and pop by the Kafé Nedan for a cup of coffee. On a tour we'll get to know the old, traditional Pajala as the author of the novel 'Popular Music' Mikael Niemi sees it. The local guide tells us about the history of Pajala and local dialect Meänkieli.

After our interesting tour of Pajala we'll head back to Hotelli Kolari.
