Lappish charm west of Torne River

The flag of Meänmaa, 'Our Country'

The rivers Tornionjoki and Muonionjoki between Finland and Sweden have always carried the meaning of passage rather than border for the people of Torne Valley in both countries. People and goods have travelled across the rivers in either direction and the establishing of a state border between the two countries in 1809 made no real difference to the locals. No wonder, since the distance between Kolari and Pajala is only 25km... This is Meänmaa, 'Our Country', on both sides of the river!

Traditional local culture

In keeping with local traditions Hotelli Kolari offers our guests a chanse to get to know our neighbours, the services and sights west from Torne River. Dealing with the locals is easy, as they are accustomed to conducting their daily business in three languages: Swedish, Finnish and the local Finnish dialect Meänkieli. One more language here or there makes no real difference...

There is plenty to see and experience in Pajala, many things are similar to their Finnish equivalent, but with a Swedish twist. Both Finnish-Swedish culture and handiwork can be found.

There is also plenty of traditional Lappish peace and quiet around; tourism industry has not yet found a foothold in Swedish Lapland and the wilderness of Meänmaa is still intact and tranquil. You get to experience this first hand on our hunting and fishing trips.

You can get more information on the services in Pajala from the local Pajala Turism & Evenemang or the sales of Hotelli Kolari by phone +358 (0)16 313733 or by e-mail.
